After spending a while travelling, I needed some time to recover back at home. Recover and earn some money that is!
Just because I am at home though doesn’t mean that I can’t still be enjoying myself and exploring Melbourne.
Although I really enjoy wandering the world and exploring new places there’s something super nice about coming home. My own bed, my family, my favourite coffee shop. But that doesn’t mean I want to rot away in my home every single day either!
High above the busy streets of Melbourne, Eureka Skydeck is the highest public vantage point in the Southern Hemisphere. Floor-to-ceiling windows give you unparalleled 360* views of the city!
From the moment you step into the Eureka Tower you’re in for a treat. Purchasing tickets was smooth, and we decided to book the Edge experience because why not. Jumping in the elevator you’re flown 285ms up to the 88th floor in just 38 seconds. THIRTY EIGHT! I don’t think my ears have popped like that since I flew in from Europe two years ago…
Ear popping aside, the Skydeck was pretty damn awesome. It was quite a clear day when we were up there, and we had a gorgeous view of the Melbourne sporting complex, Flinders Street station, Federation Square and out over the Dandenong ranges. Located around the deck are 30 viewfinders, each pointing you in the direction of key Melbourne landmarks. These finders were fantastic in locating landmarks slightly too far for me to recognise without assistance.
The real attraction at Eureka however is the Edge experience. The world’s first moving glass structure. I’ve never experienced anything quite like it! Stepping inside it feels as though you’re in a relatively normal elevator, that’s until you start moving sidewards. And until there is cracking. And the ‘glass’ falls away leaving you suspended almost 300m above the ground seemingly without anything holding you up. Talk about an adrenaline rush!
The experience lasted approximately ten minutes and included a professional photo which you could purchase afterwards if you chose to.
The on-deck bar had snacks, ice creams and drinks (alcoholic and not) which made the experience that bit nicer. We chose to sit with a wine overlooking the city – pretty cool.
We visited on a weekday and though there was a school group there when we were it wasn’t particularly busy and they were well behaved.
The Eureka Skydeck is an absolutely joyful experience. Such a fun and easy afternoon with friends! I for sure recommend anyone, local or visitor, to head up the Skydeck for a bit of easy and affordable fun in Melbourne.
The deck is open 10am – 10pm each day, meaning you can choose day or night views. They even offer a ticket upgrade so you can return on the same night to see the city in darkness. I cannot recommend this enough, the upgrade is certainly worth it, and the experience is a nice way to bookend a day out in Melbourne.
I visited Eureka as part of a Magnificent Melbourne Morning Tour, and I cannot recommend it enough! My guide was amazingly knowledgeable, and it was a fantastic way to explore my home city and really appreciate the sites I’m often too busy to notice.
